*. Play your music at a reasonable volume while travelling through suburbs and business districts, and don't space out or go through your e-mail or text messages at every stop. Carjackers & robber rely on an element of surprise, therefore if you're staying watchful of what's going on outside your car, unscrupulous guys won't have a chance to sneak up on you.
*. Properly secure your vehicle: You wouldn't leave your main door unlocked or your windows open at home, therefore stay in the routine of locking your vehicle in the same way. Keep doors locked while you are driving, and windows closed. In scenarios where people come up to you for change or for routes, make sure that it isn't a conspiracy to sidetrack you. In such a situation, rolling your window down fully is a positive NO.
*. Don't suppose that an unmarked vehicle with flashing lights is a police officer: If the vehicle wanting to stop you doesn't seem like an official vehicle, carry on driving, turn your inside light on and stop only in a habituated well lit area. Don't get out of your car, and park in a way so you could drive away instantly if need be. Lower the window, ask to see the officer's identification.
